The Time-Tracking AI Lawyers Actually Want
Renaming my time entries is not the feature. Knowing I spent twenty minutes on that email is the feature.
Every practice tool is racing to bolt AI onto time tracking, and most of them are solving the wrong half of the problem. The version they ship gives you nicer wording on entries you already created. The entry reads better. That was never the hard part.
01The leak is in the capture
The hours that quietly disappear are the ones you never logged in the first place. The twenty minutes on an email to a specific client. The quick call. The document you opened, worked on, and closed without ever starting a timer.
Prettier descriptions on the time you remembered to track does nothing about the time you forgot. That is the leak.
Renaming the entries you remembered will never recover the entries you forgot.

02Good looks like capture, then cleanup
There are tools doing the real version of this, and it is genuinely impressive. They watch your activity, see which systems you touched and for how long, then generate suggested time entries you approve. You are not starting timers or reconstructing your day at six pm. The system noticed, and it handed you a draft to confirm.
- Capture first: notice the work as it happens
- Suggest the entry, do not just rename it
- Leave the lawyer to approve, not to remember
- Native plus governance would be a different league
AI time tracking that only rewrites entries is not the upgrade it claims to be. The money is in the minutes nobody captured.
03Where it would change the game
If a practice tool captured activity that way natively, inside the system that already holds the matter, with controls the firm could see and trust, it would be in a different league. You would not be exporting your behavior to yet another vendor.
Until then, know the difference when you evaluate these features. Capture is the feature. Cleanup is a nicety.
Default / AI Cleanup
- Renames entries you already made
- Ignores the time you never logged
- Leaks revenue silently
- Still depends on memory
Designed / AI Capture
- Notices activity as it happens
- Drafts the entry you forgot
- Recovers billable minutes
- You approve instead of recall
